WIRELESS NETWORK

Bergen Public Library offers free access to the internet in the central library.

  • The wireless zone covers the ground floor and the Music Department on the 1st. floor and the wireless network is accessible in the library`s opening hours. The wireless network is an unencrypted and open network available to all library users. Logon is unnecessary.

Rules for the library`s wireless network:

  • Norwegian law applies. Misuse of the wireless in the library will be reported to the police and the user can be held criminally liable.
  • The library`s wireless network does not offer any filtering of content, spyware, spam or virus. The users of the wireless network must therefore provide adequate protection of their own computers as regards firewalls, antivirus programmes etc.
  • The library`s wireless network can be used by many users concurrently. Care must therefore be taken in sharing private or sensitive information over the library`s wireless network. Do not use personal net-services such as internet bank or passwordprotected services unencrypted over the wireless network.
  • The library is not responsible for any loss or misuse of data transferred over the wireless network.

Technical information about the wireless network:

  • The wireless network has four access points, all with the SSID ”BIBLIOTEKET”.
  • Unfortunately it is not possible to access any printers over the wireless network.

Checklist for problems concerning access to the wireless network:

  1. The wireless network is open only in library opening hours.
  2. Does your portable PC have a built-in wireless adapter? Older PCs normally do not have.
  3. Do you have a switch to enable the wireless adapter on your PC? Check that the adapter is switched on.
  4. Your PC must be configured to obtain an IP address automatically. If you are using Windows XP you can verify this by accessing Control Panel, Network connections and properties for the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) for your Wireless Network Connection.
  5. Make sure your Wireless Network Connection is not disabled. In Windows XP you can verify this by accessing Control Panel, Network Connections and right-click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Enable (if it is disabled).
  6. In addition, you can check that "BIBLIOTEKET" is available as a wireless network by accessing the menu choice "View available wireless networks" (in the Control Panel, Network Connections).
If "BIBLIOTEKET" is available select this and click on "Connect". If multiple choices of "BIBLIOTEKET" are available select the one with the highest signal strength.
